DE-MINING IN UKRAINE

The full extent of mine and explosive contamination across Ukraine remains undetermined, particularly in areas of active combat operations and restricted humanitarian access. Continuous jamming hinders various drone operations.

DE-MINING

History of landmines in Ukraine

As of recent estimates, it is believed that Ukraine is facing a significant landmine crisis, with millions of unexploded ordnance littering the landscape due to ongoing conflicts, particularly since the escalation of hostilities in 2014 and the Russian invasion in 2022. Removing these landmines is an enormous and complex task that could take decades to complete, with some experts estimating that it could take up to 20 years or more to fully clear the affected areas. Efforts to address this dangerous issue are ongoing, but the sheer scale of the problem poses a daunting challenge for humanitarian organizations and the Ukrainian government.

Estimated 138,000 sq km of Ukrainian territory affected — approximately one-third of the country.

Mines, including scatterable variants, are delivered via artillery rockets, projectiles, and drones, complicating mapping and clearance in real time.

Ongoing Developments: As hostilities continue, newly contested regions are becoming contaminated, expanding the total affected area.

CURRENT ASSESSMENT

OPERATION

Limited access, active fighting, and evolving deployment methods hinder accurate assessment and clearance operations.

OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES

Civilian Risk: High

Agriculture: Significant disruption to farmland and food production.

Reconstruction: Clearance delays continue to impede infrastructure repair and humanitarian recovery efforts.
